A beautifully weathered handwoven basket made from wild Akebi/Akebia vine woven into a fluid, soft-bodied form that yields gently to the touch. Dating from the early 20th century, this particularly singular piece departs from rigid frame basketry, existing instead as a quiet, pliable pocket that shifts naturally with its contents. Having spent much of its past life suspended as an evocative wall-hanging vessel, it carries an immense sculptural presence, bringing the unhurried spirit of wabi-sabi into the modern space.
Materials
Hand-woven from flexible wild vine or tree root fibres using a loose, diamond-lattice plaiting technique that allows river water to flush through effortlessly. The rounded, oblong body features an elongated side-opening flap framed by a thick, structurally reinforced vine rim. It retains its authentic, hand-twisted hemp utility ropes knotted carefully around the entrance lip, which historically secured the trap to riverbeds or stakes. Decades of immersion and domestic storage have developed a deeply weathered, matte-umber patina with varying charcoal tones.
