Antique Japanese Woven Hanging Pouch with Wooden Collar
An antique Japanese woven wall hanging pouch featuring a solid wooden collar, a densely woven body and a patterned textile hanging cord, dating from the early 20th century. This piece was originally a machete sheath used by peasants for foraging. However, the style eventually became popular in the world of Japanese flower arrangement for displaying minimal stems. Today, it is widely recognised as a collector's piece within the Japanese antiques industry. The combination of weathered wood, textured weaving and woven cord gives the piece a distinctive folk-art character.
