Vintage Japanese Oil Painting - Pagoda Above Terraced Fields
A Japanese landscape oil painting depicting a multi-tiered pagoda rising above a rural countryside of terraced fields, wooded slopes and distant hills. Broad horizontal bands of cultivated land lead across the foreground, while expressive brushwork captures the varied textures of the vegetation and the surrounding landscape.
The painting features a fresh, earthy palette of chartreuse, sage and olive greens, complemented by warm ochres and dark browns beneath a pale green and cream sky. Its Western-influenced approach is associated with Yōga, the Japanese tradition of oil painting and other Western-style techniques.
The canvas is signed in the lower right, with the cursive signature appearing to “Shinjo”, as seen on another pagoda landscape in the collection. The reverse bears a “UCHU-DO” (宇宙堂) stamp on the wooden stretcher.
