Vintage Japanese Kiri Wood Box with Oshie Kokeshi Doll Fabric Art

This vintage Japanese storage box (komono-ire) is an example of mid-century Mingei (Japanese Folk Art), dating to the Showa period. Crafted from traditional Kiri wood, the box features a dark, rustic patina that beautifully highlights the natural grain of the timber.

The lid is adorned with three Kokeshi dolls rendered in the traditional art style of Oshie. This intricate technique involves padding shaped cards with cotton wool and wrapping them in fragments of vintage kimono silk and woven brocade fabrics to create a three-dimensional relief picture.

The dolls' garments feature subtle gold-thread detailing, contrasting against hand painted faces.

The wood displays minor surface wear and a rich patina consistent with age. Some of the threading on the lid design have worn or come away after decades of use.
