Vintage Japanese Dog Wooden Carving
This vintage hand-carved wooden figurine depicts the Tosa Inu (土佐犬), also known as the Japanese Mastiff, dated 1984. Not super old but a great example of the late 20th century mingei and craftsmanship.
Carved in a distinctive, bold style, the figurine showcases the character and texture of the natural wood, with faceted chisel marks that give the piece its sculptural presence. Its detailed ceremonial attire, including a decorative fringed apron and a thick, braided rope across the back, evokes the traditional presentation of champion Tosa dogs, reflecting the breed’s historic association with Japanese sumo culture. The thick, braided white cotton rope knotted on its back mimics the sacred ropes worn by grand champion sumo wrestlers.
The apron bears the hand-incised characters 土佐 (Tosa), linking the piece to its regional heritage. A carved signature beneath the base adds further interest for collectors of Japanese folk art and traditional woodcarving.
