Studio Pottery Reclining Dog Figurine

A vintage Japanese studio pottery figurine depicting a reclining cat, dating to the early-mid century. Hand-sculpted with highly textured, gestural tool markings that define its thick coat, this expressive piece stands apart from conventional mass-produced ceramics. The dog is modelled with alert, floppy ears and inlaid eyes featuring a contrasting yellow and black glaze glaze. Incised with an authentic artist signature on the base.

Hand-formed from iron-rich terracotta clay, finished in a dark, textured unglazed slip and localized earth-toned glazes. The feline's eyes are detailed with smooth ochre and dark brown glazes that stand out sharply against the rough, matte body. The smooth, flat base is cleanly incised with the hand-etched maker’s mark reading Hayama (叶山).
