Japanese Oil Painting of the Former Glover Residence, Nagasaki - Tetsuo Matsuo, 1963

£75.00

An original Japanese oil painting depicting a traditional Western-style residence, with a tiled veranda roof, substantial pillars and climbing greenery framing a view towards the surrounding landscape. Small figures on the pathway add a sense of scale to the architectural scene. Textured brushwork and earthy colours give the painting a lively, impressionistic quality.

The reverse bears Japanese inscriptions identifying the subject as 「倉場氏旧邸」 (Kuraba-shi Kyūtei, “Former Kuraba Residence”), the artist as 松尾哲男 (Tetsuo Matsuo), and the date as September 1963 (Shōwa 38). The subject is identified as the former residence associated with Thomas Glover in Nagasaki, now part of Glover Garden. A blue graphic mark appears on the front, while the reverse bears a “Tackey Canvas” label or stamp.
