Set of 4 Ikkan-Bari Farm Tubs

Heavily weathered set of four Japanese ikkan-bari baskets, made by covering woven bamboo baskets with layers of washi paper and protected with persimmon dye. The baskets are different sizes, with the original woven structure still visible in places.

Age: Meiji Era (1868-1912)

Materials
Made from hand-woven split bamboo, layered washi paper. They also used some persimmon dyed paper which acted as a natural bug repellent. Fragments of printed and handwritten Japanese paper remain visible beneath the outer layers, including ledger text and calligraphic marks. The surfaces show areas of exposed bamboo, darkened fibre, patching and worn paper, with the layers giving each tub a varied texture and appearance.

Condition & Antique Character
As antique Japanese objects, these tubs have lived a previous life and show signs of age and use. Wear to the paper layers, surface marks, discolouration, fraying and areas of repair or patching are to be expected.

They also show evidence of historical woodworm damage, including more noticeable damage to one piece. The bamboo structures remain sound, but these pieces should be treated as decorative antiques. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
