Japanese Carved Wooden Buddha - Edo / Meiji Era
A hand-carved Japanese wooden Buddhist figure with a simplified form, angular robe and minimal facial features, dating from the mid-late 19th Century, spanning the late Edo (pre 1868) and Meiji (1868–1912) periods.
The carving combines a roughly worked body with a more defined face and a calm expression. Its direct, faceted treatment is reminiscent of Enku-style Buddhist sculpture, though the precise attribution and identity of the figure are unconfirmed. The piece is accompanied by a wooden storage box with handwritten Japanese inscriptions.
Materials
Carved wood with a dark, aged surface and a matte finish. The body retains bold, angular tool marks, with the natural form of the timber informing the overall shape. The figure has a wedge-shaped base. The accompanying wooden box has handwritten kanji on the lid and shows an aged surface.
