Hand-Carved Ainu Wooden Bear Figurine (Kibori Kuma)

A vintage Japanese hand-carved wooden bear sculpture (kibori kuma), originating from Hokkaido and dating to the mid-to-late 20th century. Departing from standard crouching formats, this striking folk art (mingei) piece depicts a bear dynamically scaling a steep, rocky cliff face. The entire surface is defined by rhythmic, heavily textured chisel strokes that represent the animal's thick fur coat and the rugged stone facade. Free-standing with a commanding architectural presence, it makes a substantial sculptural statement on a desk, mantlepiece, or console table.

Hand-carved from a single block of dense, native Japanese hardwood. The timber is finished in a very dark, near-black charcoal and dark espresso stain that highlights the faceted chisel cuts, paired with lighter, natural golden-brown wood grain visible along the raw, unpolished lower base edges.

As an antique object, this piece has lived a previous life and shows the gentle marks of time and utility. Several prominent, natural hairline age cracks are present through the back and side of the bear's torso, along with minor surface scuffs, small chips to the sharpest rock peaks, and expected shelf wear to the underside.
