Early 20C Wabi-sabi Sake Bottle - Bizen Ware Tokkuri

Antiques Japanese Bizen ware tokkuri, a small ceramic sake bottle with an unglazed surface and narrow neck. The body has warm brown and reddish tones with darker areas formed during firing.

Materials
Made from dense, iron-rich stoneware clay and fired at high temperature without an applied glaze. Natural ash deposits and changes in the atmosphere of the wood-fired kiln have produced variations in colour, from chocolate brown and ochre to reddish tones. Fine horizontal throwing lines remain visible around the lower body, while a shallow indentation gives the form a slightly irregular profile. The rim is narrow and slightly flared.
