Bizen Ware Tokkuri - Japanese Sake Bottle

Traditional Japanese Bizen ware tokkuri, a small sake bottle with a rounded, compact body and narrow neck. The flared rim is suited to pouring sake and the form can also be used as a small flower vessel.

Materials
Made from dense, iron-rich stoneware clay and fired at high temperature without an applied glaze. The body has copper-red, bronze and deep brown tones, with pronounced sangiri effects in smoky grey, blue-black and pale silver-white across the lower section. Natural goma ash has accumulated around the upper shoulders, creating variations in colour and surface texture. The unglazed base bears a large hand-incised maker's mark and retains a coarse, sandy texture.
