Bizen Ware Square Cylindrical Vase - Kaku-Tsutsu

Traditional Japanese Bizen ware kaku-tsutsu, a tall square-cylindrical flower vase with gently rounded corners. The columnar form has a thick, even rim and is suited to vertical arrangements of branches, grasses or flowers.

Materials
Made from dense, iron-rich stoneware clay and fired at high temperature without an applied glaze. The body has deep purplish-brown and bronze tones, with variations in colour and surface texture from the wood-firing process. The lower section shows pronounced sangiri kiln effects, with darker grey, blue-black and pale ash tones. The unglazed base retains tool markings and an incised maker's mark.
