An antique Japanese street vendor's wooden stool, dating to the Meiji or Taisho era. This rustic piece of regional folk furniture (mingei) features a distinctive trapezoidal form with an integrated circular handle cut-out for transport through busy market crowds. Faint, handwritten ink characters (sumi) remain visible on the underside base panels, documenting its historic ownership or workshop origin in regional Japan.
Materials
Hand-assembled panels of native conifer wood, likely cedar (sugi) or pine (matsu), fastened together with early historic iron nails. The unlined wood has been naturally seasoned by decades of market use, developing a rich caramel-toned grain with a dark, polished patina across the seat surface from handling.
