Early 20C Antique Japanese Ten-Drawer Document Tansu Chest

An antique Japanese multi-drawer document chest, dating from approximately 1900–1920, spanning the late Meiji (1868–1912) and Taishō (1912–1926) periods. The chest features ten shallow drawers arranged in two symmetrical columns, each fitted with original hand-forged iron hardware. These compact drawer chests were practical storage furniture for papers, documents, tools, and other small goods.

Materials

Constructed from Japan ese timber with a dark, naturally aged finish and visible grain across the exterior. The drawers are made from lighter timber, providing a contrast to the darker cabinet body. The chest retains its original hand-forged iron fittings, including circular lock plates, warabite-style drawer handles, and structural iron brackets. Keys not included.

Condition & Antique Character

The chest retains a rich, rustic appearance with extensive surface rubbing, scratches, dents, staining, and variations in colour across the timber. The top shows prominent historic marks and surface wear consistent with prolonged practical use.

The drawer fronts show further rubbing and handling marks, while the lighter timber interiors retain their natural aged appearance. One drawer contains a small natural knot hole in the base panel, as shown in the photographs.

The original iron hardware has developed a deep, naturally darkened patina with areas of stable oxidation. All ten drawers are reported to open and close smoothly. Minor timber losses, edge wear, small separations, old repairs, and other marks of age may be present.
