Antique Ebonised Japanese Mizuya Tansu Cabinet

An antique Japanese mizuya-tansu (kitchen or dining chest), dating from approximately 1920–1940, spanning the Taishō (1912–1926) and early Shōwa (1926–1989) periods. The cabinet features an asymmetric arrangement of glass-fronted sliding doors, drawers, and smaller storage compartments, characteristic of traditional Japanese household cabinetry. The exterior has been given a contemporary matte ebonised finish, while the original timber construction and hardware remain visible.

Materials

Constructed from Japanese timber with wood-framed sliding glass doors and original iron drawer fittings. The exterior has been finished in a modern matte charcoal-black stain, allowing the underlying grain and texture of the timber to remain visible. The drawer interiors retain their natural aged timber finish, providing a contrast to the darker exterior.

Condition & Antique Character

The cabinet combines its original early 20th-century construction with a later contemporary finish. The charcoal-black exterior is clean and even, with the natural grain of the aged timber remaining visible beneath the low-sheen surface.

The drawer interiors retain their original timber character, with natural variations in colour and signs of previous use. One internal drawer edge shows historic wear and chipping, as pictured. Minor timber shrinkage, small gaps, surface marks, and other age-related imperfections may be present.

The glass panels have been replaced and the sliding doors operate properly. The original iron fittings have developed a naturally darkened patina. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
