19C Antique Japanese Kannon Tansu Chest
An antique Japanese dating from the late Edo period. Constructed in two stacking sections, the chest features a pair of large double doors secured by substantial hand-forged iron hardware, with additional storage compartments and drawers below. Designed for the storage of clothing and household textiles, the chest combines practical construction with distinctive traditional ironwork.
Materials
Constructed from Japanese timber, with a dark, naturally aged exterior retaining areas of its original lacquered finish and visible wood grain. The interior is finished in a contrasting red or vermilion lacquer, with lighter, unfinished timber used within the drawers and compartments. The chest retains substantial hand-forged iron hinges, handles, lock plates, and other original fittings.

Condition & Antique Character
The chest retains a naturally aged and weathered appearance, with extensive rubbing, fading, scratches, dents, and variations in colour across the exterior. The original finish has worn considerably in places, exposing the underlying timber and giving the chest a dry, rustic character.
The contrasting red interior remains particularly striking, with areas of fading, rubbing, and surface wear consistent with age and use. The original iron hardware has developed a deep, naturally darkened patina, with further signs of handling visible around the doors, drawers, and carrying handles. There is a circular mark on the top of the cabinet.
Minor timber losses, edge wear, old repairs, and other marks of age may be present. The chest has not been overly restored and retains the character of a substantial piece of working Japanese household furniture. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
