Wooden Kamidana Shrine - Miniature Shinto Altar

A beautifully aged antique Japanese wooden kamidana (miniature home shrine altar), dating from Meiji Era (1868-1912). Modeled after traditional Shinto shrine architecture, it features a characteristically curved gabled roofline and two hinged front doors that open to reveal a hollow inner sanctuary once used for housing protective talismans (ofuda). Built to be self-standing on a flat base or positioned on a high shelf.

Constructed from traditional Japanese softwood paneling, joined with historical wire nails and flush joinery. The timber surfaces are finished in a dark, historic brown stain that displays fine vertical grain patterns along the back board and contrasting, aged charcoal tones across the curved roof slates.

As an antique object, this piece has lived a previous life and shows the gentle marks of time and utility. Minor surface scuffs to the roof pitch, small historical abrasions along the base edges, general wood shrinkage, and expected loosening to the door hinges from long-term domestic use are present.
