Highly decorative pair of hand carved snow rakes for thatched roofs from Fukushima Region.
Age: Meiji Era (1868-1912).
Materials
Hand-carved from dense, heavy native hardwood, chosen historically to withstand constant moisture and heavy resistance without splitting. The unvarnished surfaces have developed a deep, scorched-umber and charcoal patina from decades of use and natural oxidation. The reverse sides reveal beautiful, highly tactile grain lines and raw adze-cut tool markings left behind by the craftsman.
