Large Wooden Daruma Mould

An antique Japanese wooden Daruma mould from the early 20th century.

This hand carved mould is historically used by Japanese artisans to form the traditional papier-mache body of Japanese iconic daruma dolls. While modern factories have largely replaced them with automated vacuum-forming technology, these antique wooden moulds remain highly valued cultural artifacts and collector’s items.

Hand-carved from a single, heavy block of native Japanese timber. The wood surface is smoothly finished, showing a rich honey-amber tone with fine, natural vertical grain paths, subtle wood cross-sections at the crown, and a soft, aged semi-gloss luster.

As an antique object, this piece has lived a previous life and shows the gentle marks of time and utility. Fine hairline age cracks to the crown, minor surface scuffs, a faint trace of white substance or historical wax residue on the rear lower curve, and expected shelf wear to the base are present, all reflecting its past history as a displayed object.
