Bizen Ware Tsuru-Tsuki Hanaire - Handled Flower Vase

Traditional Japanese Bizen ware tsuru-tsuki hanaire, a small handled flower vase with a stout, rounded body and two ceramic loops supporting a woven natural-fibre handle. The handle arches over the mouth, giving the piece a distinctive basket-like form.

Age: Mid 20th Century

Materials
Made from dense, iron-rich stoneware clay and fired at high temperature without an applied glaze. The body has dark smoky plum and charcoal tones across the upper section, with warmer ochre and brick-red firing marks below. Fine horizontal throwing lines remain visible across the lower body. Two raised ceramic loops are incorporated into the shoulders to hold the woven handle. The base bears an incised maker's mark and retains subtle tool marks from the making process.
