Hand-constructed from solid panels of native Japanese softwood, likely pine (matsu) or cedar (sugi), showcasing a beautiful, prominent straight grain (masame). The unlined timber surfaces have been left natural and warm, while the underside panels retain a heavily darkened, soot-patinated finish from its historic domestic environment.

As a vintage object, this piece has lived a previous life and shows the gentle marks of time and utility. The exterior wood features fine age-related surface grain checking, historic organic shrinkage gaps between the tier joins, and early iron nail heads displaying deep oxidation. The step edges and corners show a beautifully soft, rounded wear from decades of foot traffic, along with a few minor, stabilized wood splits around the natural knots on the upper tread.
