Antique Japanese Wooden Mallet

A decorative Japanese wooden mallet (kizuchi) featuring a motif of  Daikokuten, one of Lucky Seven Gods amd syncretic deity of welt, fortune and household abundance. This traditional tool features a heavy, faceted octagonal head coupled with a robust handle that flares smoothly at both ends to ensure a secure grip. Hand-inked calligraphic kanji characters are visible along the sides of the mallet head, denoting original ownership or workshop identification.

Age: Early 20C

Hand-carved from a dense Japanese hardwood, selected historically for its high impact resistance and weight. The piece features a weathered black sumi ink or dark stained finish that has worn away along the high-contact edges, revealing the warm, natural wood grain underneath. Traces of historical black ink characters are visible on the unvarnished side panels.

As an antique object, this piece has lived a previous life and shows the gentle marks of time and utility. Deep indentations and strike marks on the mallet faces, small chips to the handle corners, surface scuffs, and expected fading to the hand-written kanji are all present, reflecting extensive workshop use.
