Yogi Antique Japanese Padded Sleeping Robe - Indigo Katazome Kimono

An authentic antique Japanese indigo Yogi, padded sleeping robe, dating from Taisho era (1912-1926). A yogi is a traditional Japanese blanket shaped like a kimono and heavily padded with cotton for insulation. By wrapping snugly around the body with no gaps, it blocks out cold drafts. Historically, yogi were created purely for practical warmth rather than fashion.

Composed of multiple layers of historical, indigo-dyed, and patterned fabrics. Designed as a traditional winter house coat, this versatile garment features a striking, high-contrast visual layout. The main body showcases an elaborate, rhythmic field of stenciled Katazome resist-dyed cotton depicting blooming chrysanthemums (Kiku) and swirling vines, contrasted by a beautiful, multi-colored floral shoulder yoke in warm ochre, rust, and sage tones. The hem and interior are reinforced with solid, deep indigo-dyed cotton, while a thick, padded black cotton collar frames the open front.

Materials & Natural Dyes
100% Handwoven, homespun, and hand-stitched antique cotton and indigo fabrics, layered with an internal insulating wadding. Through decades of careful handling, natural ageing, and repeated washings, the textile has evolved a magnificent, complex patina. The entire padded structure is structurally secured by long rows of functional vertical running stitches.

Condition & Antique Character
As an authentic antique artifact, this piece carries the beautiful imprints of its previous life. It possesses a pure wabi-sabi aesthetic, with honest signs of age, utility, and historic repair.

Beautiful areas of natural fading, uneven colour saturation, organic edge fraying, thinning zones, and small historical marks. Notably, this piece features a small historical tear on the patterned shoulder panel that exposes the inner weave, along with charming signs of minor edge friction on the padded body. These elements are not flaws, but rather the highly coveted characteristics that verify its absolute antiquity.

There is a noticeable tear on the top of the left shoulder, and visible colour staining here and there, as shown in the photos.
