An antique Japanese mid-size tansu chest (ko-tansu), dating from the early 20th century. The chest features sliding wooden doors enclosing an internal shelf, several small drawers, and a concealed compartment in the lower right with two internal drawers. The compact construction and extensive iron hardware are characteristic of traditional Japanese tansu furniture.

Materials

Constructed from Japanese timber with a warm red-brown aged finish and visible natural grain. The chest retains substantial hand-forged iron hardware, including circular lock plates, ring handles, warabite-style drawer pulls, corner fittings, and retractable side carrying handles. The interior timber remains lighter in colour, with natural variations from age and use.

Condition & Antique Character

The chest retains a warm, naturally aged appearance, with surface rubbing, scratches, abrasions, fading, and variations in colour across the timber. The finish has developed an attractive aged patina through use, with areas of wear particularly visible around the drawer fronts, doors, and edges.

A historic red dye or ink mark is visible on the floor of the interior shelf compartment. The original iron fittings have developed a deep, naturally darkened patina with areas of stable oxidation. One of the sliding doors carries a visible scratch line, though the sliding doors, drawers, and concealed compartment remain functional.

Minor timber losses, edge wear, small separations, old repairs, and other marks of age may be present. The chest retains the character of an original working piece of early 20th-century Japanese furniture. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
