Antique Japanese Wooden Daruma Mould

£185.00

A hand-carved Japanese wooden Daruma mould with a highly simplified, hooded form, and features multiple, prominent splits across the face, dating from the early 20th century.

This hand carved mould is historically used by Japanese artisans to form the traditional papier-mache body of Japanese iconic daruma dolls. While modern factories have largely replaced them with automated vacuum-forming technology, these antique wooden moulds remain highly valued cultural artifacts and collector’s items.

The face and body are reduced to bold, block-like features, while the heavy cowl and angular carving marks give the figure a distinctly stylised appearance. The dark brown surface allows the natural grain and marks of the carving to remain visible.

Materials
Carved solid wood with a dark brown stained or aged finish. The figure has pronounced chisel facets across the body and hood, with a rounded, weighted form characteristic of stylized Daruma figures. A natural split runs along the back and continues towards the base.

Condition & Antique Character
As an antique or vintage Japanese wooden figure, this piece has lived a previous life and shows signs of age and use. The surface has naturally darkened and developed variations in colour, grain and finish. The prominent split along the back, front and base is part of the aged wood and should be considered when assessing the condition; please refer closely to the photographs for its extent and appearance. The irregular carving marks and surface variations are part of the original making process. Please note that colours may appear slightly different in person from those shown in the photographs, depending on lighting and screen settings. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
