A double-sided antique Japanese Boro textile composed of multiple layers of historical, indigo, hand-patched fabrics, dating from Meiji Era (1868-1912). Because both faces feature their own unique, intricate arrangement of fabrics, this versatile piece is completely reversible and suitable for double-sided display. This item features a highly distinct, graphic interplay of geometric linear patterns rather than block patchwork. The front side showcases an extensive field of fine, vertical indigo-and-white striped cotton panels accented with large, bold blocks of grid-patterned plaid, while the reverse reveals a fascinatingly raw, heavily distressed composition complete with dimensional fabric flaps, historical tears, and highly visible layered windows that bare the interior structure of the textile.

Materials & Natural Dyes
100% Handwoven, homespun, and hand-stitched antique cotton, indigo fabrics. Through decades of careful handling, natural ageing, and repeated washings, the textile has evolved a magnificent, complex patina. The entire piece is deeply texturized by straight columns of tight, vertical running hand-stitches that secure the rustic farming fabrics together.

Condition & Antique Character
As an authentic antique artifact, this piece carries the beautiful imprints of its previous life. It possesses a pure wabi-sabi aesthetic, with honest signs of age, utility, and historic repair. Beautiful areas of natural fading, uneven colour saturation, organic edge fraying, thinning zones, visible historical marks, and multi-layered fabric windows. This specific piece features more prominent structural distressing on one face, including dramatic open tears and loose fabric flaps that highly technical textile collectors covet for their raw, sculptural quality. These elements are not flaws, but rather the highly coveted characteristics that verify its absolute antiquity.

The garment has been rinsed through cold water, but it has not been given a deep wash since we acquired it from the previous owner.
