Antique Japanese Boro Textile, Early - Mid 20th Century

A double-sided antique Japanese Boro textile composed of multiple layers of historical, indigo, hand-patched fabrics, dating from around late Taisho era (1912-1926) to early Showa era (1926-). Because both faces feature their own unique, intricate arrangement of fabrics, this versatile piece is completely reversible and suitable for double-sided display. This exceptionally vibrant, highly graphic piece features rare accents of colour alongside an incredibly rich patchwork mosaic.

One side highlights deep indigos intercut with striking, uncommon bursts of rich plum, madder-red, and warm ochre tones, while the alternate side reveals a beautifully balanced grid-like layout of light indigo tones and textured geometric blocks.

Materials & Natural Dyes
100% Handwoven, homespun, and hand-stitched antique cotton and indigo fabrics, interspersed with historical coloured panels. Through decades of careful handling, natural ageing, and repeated washings, the textile has evolved a magnificent, complex patina, bound together by dense rows of multi-directional, hand-done Sashiko stiches.

Condition & Antique Character
As an authentic antique artifact, this piece carries the beautiful imprints of its previous life. It possesses a pure wabi-sabi aesthetic, with honest signs of age, utility, and historic repair.

Expect beautiful areas of natural fading, uneven color saturation, organic edge fraying, thinning zones, visible historical marks, and multi-layered fabric windows. These elements are not flaws, but rather the highly coveted characteristics that verify its absolute antiquity.

The garment has been rinsed through with cold water but it has not been given a deep wash since we acquired it from the previous owner.
