An antique Japanese boro textile dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, broadly within the Meiji period (1868–1912). The textile is worked on both sides, each with a distinct composition. One side features larger geometric areas of muted green, purple, indigo and striped fabrics, while the reverse has a more heavily worked indigo surface with areas revealing the layers beneath.

Materials
Historic Japanese cotton textiles, including indigo-dyed and naturally coloured woven fabrics, layered patches and extensive hand stitching. The contrasting fabrics and repeated repairs create a richly textured surface on both sides.

Condition & Antique Character
Naturally aged and well used, with fading, fraying, surface wear, areas of thinning, small tears, exposed underlying layers, and visible age marks. The reverse is particularly distressed, revealing earlier fabrics beneath the surface. The double-sided construction allows both faces to be displayed. The garment has been rinsed through cold water, but it has not been given a deep wash since we acquired it from the previous owner.
