A striking antique Japanese boro textile dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, broadly within the Meiji period (1868–1912). The heavily layered construction and dramatic central area of wear reveal multiple underlying layers of indigo-dyed cloth, giving the textile an unusually deep and tactile surface.

Materials
Historic Japanese cotton textiles, predominantly indigo-dyed, with varied woven patterns, layered patches and extensive hand stitching. The exposed layers reveal contrasting striped and plain fabrics beneath the surface.

Condition & Antique Character
Heavily aged and naturally distressed, with open areas of wear, exposed underlying layers, frayed edges, thinning, fading, historic repairs, extensive hand stitching, and visible age marks. The central opening and visible layers are particularly characteristic of the textile's long history of use and repair. The piece remains structurally intact while retaining its fragile, primitive character. 

The garment has been rinsed through with cold water but it  has not been given a deep wash since we acquired from the previous owner.
