An antique Japanese boro textile dating from the late 19th century, broadly from the first half of Meiji period (1868–1912). Boro refers to utilitarian textiles that were repeatedly patched, repaired and reinforced over many years, creating the layered surface, irregularity and distinctive character associated with these textiles.

Materials
Historic Japanese textile fragments, predominantly indigo-dyed cotton, with contrasting woven patterns and extensive hand stitching and patching. The varied fabrics, repairs and layers create a richly textured surface.

Condition & Antique Character
Historic and naturally worn, with extensive patching, hand stitching, fading, frayed edges, surface wear and areas of loss consistent with the age and original utilitarian use of boro textiles. Each repair and variation forms part of its antique character. This piece also has colour damage, particularly on one side, in the form of visible darker, duller stains. 

The garment has been rinsed through with cold water but it has not been given a deep wash since we acquired from the previous owner.
